Hello parents and guardians!
We understand you must be anxious to know what's happening here in Saumur and boy, have we got fun updates for you!
After heading home with their respective host families on Friday, June 7, the students enjoyed the 3 day long weekend getting over jet lag, getting settled in to their new home, getting to know their host families and also getting to know the region a little bit.
Tuesday, June 11, was our first day of the program. We met at the gate of Institution St. Louis, our school for the next 5 weeks, and we headed to our classroom. Here are a few pictures of all the students settled in to their seats.
We crossed the bridge over the Loire and got some beautiful views of the city and the Château de Saumur.
Looking at the city from the other side was incredible and we stopped to take it all in and of course, to take a classic IUHPFL group shot!
From here, we crossed the bridge and walked past the theater, the town hall and through the winding inner streets of downtown Saumur making our way up to the famous château. Once there we took a much needed break to enjoy the view and to catch our breaths.
Then we headed back towards the school just in time for lunch at the school cafeteria where we got salad, an appetizer of our choice, cheese, the main dish of the day which was chicken and beans and a choice of dessert. This was a great experience for the students because they learnt about french food culture and they shared common space with other students of the school. They even made friends with some curious students from middle school and didn't break the no english rule even once!
The second half of the day was spent taking assessment tests in listening, reading and grammar. At 4pm, students left the school and enjoyed their free time exploring the city following which they all got home safe by curfew time which is 6.30 pm. All in all, a fantastic first day!
Ending this post with a video of everyone sending a big Bonjour to all of you with wide happy smiles!
Day 2 & 3 updates coming up soon!

After making some important announcements about the program, we headed out for a tour of Saumur with Martin as our friendly guide! Martin showed the students the nearest mall which is less than a 10 minute walk from school and then we headed past the cavalry school and walked through the beautiful downtown Saumur.
