Week 4 - Part 4, July 4th Picnic!

Thursday was 4th of July and we began the day wishing everyone a Happy 4th of July or as we did "Bonne fête nationale!" Today was also the day that students did the second self-evaluation to analyze the progress they've made and to figure out strengths and weaknesses. Post this, it was time for classes. However, the school was testing their fire alarm systems so we went old school and held classes out in the open under the shade of trees! I have to admit that this was a fun break from the routine :)
For lunch, we were surprised with a lot of yummy options at the school canteen. We had hamburgers, fries, bacon, andouille sausage and we also had some good salad, fruit and dessert options. Post lunch, we had one hour study period following which the students were given time to practice their individual / group performances for the farewell show. Time really flies during the program because we didn't realize that the show is next Friday, July 12. With one week to go, the students really took great initiative towards their performances. They choreographed and practiced their group dance, solo-ists practiced their songs in another room and some students practiced their small group dance in a third classroom. Overall, a productive day spent very well !
In the evening, we had a 4th of July potluck dinner / picnic in a troglodyte cave at the town hall of Distré. This region of the Loire valley is famous for its troglodyte stones and caves. These natural stones are excellent for hot summer temperatures because they remain cool.
All host families and students came with their picnics and we had a really good time together. We got to eat a variety of foods prepared by the generous host families. We were also joined by the mayors of Saumur, Distré and St. Hillaire-St.Florent, who provide tremendous support to the IUHPFL program. The students also sang the French and American national anthems for the families and the mayors.
Here are a few photos from the lovely evening we had. Stay tuned for the last post of the week where we played a regional sport called "Boule de fort".
Ciao!

Week 4 - Part 3

Bonjour everyone!

On Wednesday, we had classes as usual before lunch and then we ate at the mall's foodcourt.

After lunch, the students spent an hour studying and then it was time to play! Check out the video below.

It was also Nismie's birthday so we had a little party with some juice, candy, madeleines and of course, some non-alcoholic bubbly! Post this celebration, everyone headed out to enjoy their free time before returning home. Don't forget to check out the short video below!

Because we did so many activities, each post will be a little short with many pictures. Hope you enjoy the journey with the students.
Coming up, 4th of July potluck dinner!
Ciao!

Week 4 - Part 2 Bowling!

Hello eager parents, guardians and friends of IUHPFL!
On Tuesday, we proposed Bowling as an optional activity for the group and guess what, everyone enthusiastically said yes.
So, after a regular day of class and lunch, the students used the afternoon to study and also prepare for their performances for the end of the program show.

After this, we all headed out for an evening of bowling. Once there, we divided the students in to three groups and the games began! There are two short videos after the photos of everyone enjoying themselves!
At around 6.30 pm, host families came and picked up the students and everyone headed home. This was a super fun activity because the students got to go out as a large group and completely relax. Overall, a big success!

That's all for now folks! Keep watching this space for more IUHPFL Saumur 2019 fun!

Week 4 - Part 1

Hey all!
Week four is really charged up for us here. So you're going to see photos of lots of different activities. Hope you enjoy Part 1 of this week!
On Monday, the students spent the afternoon with young kids aging 5 - 12. These are kids who have learning disabilities and many come from troubled families. Overall, the students engaged very well with the kids and had a fantastic time.
Before heading to their classroom, we practiced a French song which the students would sing for the kids. Once there, we began the interaction with some songs. The French kids sang for our students and then it was our students' turn.

After this, the teachers created small groups so that each of our IUHPFL student could play with 2 to 3 kids of Saint-Louis. Some groups played with different kinds of building games like Lego and magnetic tiles. Others played boards games and other games like Dominoes.

After an hour of lots of games, everyone headed outside to play. It was amazing to see our students and these kids getting along so well, almost as if they had been friends for a long time!

This was our fun Monday! Stay tuned for bowling on Tuesday and some football on Wednesday!
Ciao!
